SpaceX Just Did Something Incredible With Falcon Heavy — But That Wasn’t the Biggest Surprise Falcon Heavy has just thundered away from Launch Complex 39A, carrying one of NASA’s most ambitious observatories ever built. And this launch was about much more than another powerful rocket leaving Florida. Riding inside that fairing was a telescope designed to survey the universe on a scale no previous NASA observatory has attempted. At 7:26 a.m. EDT, SpaceX launched NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope aboard Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center. The 27-engine rocket cleared the tower and accelerated through the atmosphere, passing through Max Q—the point of maximum aerodynamic stress during ascent. Then came the first major milestone. The two Falcon Heavy side boosters separated from the center core and began their return toward Florida.
