In 1969, NASA landed humans on the Moon for the first time through the Apollo program. Now, we are going back—this time, to stay. President Donald J. Trump signed Space Policy Directive 1 in 2017, setting NASA on a new path and calling for an innovative, sustainable exploration program built with commercial and international partners. That vision became Artemis—a mission to return humanity to the Moon, unlock new scientific and economic opportunities, and prepare for the first crewed missions to Mars. Under Artemis, astronauts will embark on increasingly challenging lunar missions, building the foundation for humanity’s next giant leap across the solar system.
